Q. Tell me about Christmas cakes in Japan.
A. Christmas is basically just an excuse to party for most Japanese people but we are serious about Christmas cakes and even those who don't usually eat cakes get one. Local mom-and-pop cake shops, chain cake shops, food floor of department stores, convenience stores, supermarkets, grocery stores...you can find it everywhere. Convenience stores collab with famous patisserie, matcha brand, chocolatier, even with famous idol group to make their exclusive cakes and these are not even a little bit inferior to the ones from professional cake shops. The one in the picture is matcha and white chocolate cake, Family Mart x Kanbayashi Shunsho matcha shop who has 450 year old history in Kyoto collaboration. If you are in Japan around Christmas, don’t even think about avoiding convenience store and try one (You need to order in advance though) ! If you are traveling alone and a whole cake is too big, no worries ! They have small personal size cakes look like the ones in second picture, done by 7/11 last year ! .
