My bento usually consists of 6 elements. By putting those 6, you can clear the rule #4 with ease.
2. Main dish (Syogayaki - Japanese pork ginger)
3. Vegetable side dish 1 (carrot salad)
4. Vegetable side dish 2 (sweet potato)
5. Egg (boiled egg)
6. Something to refresh your mouth (pickled onion)
For this bento, I also put edamame skewers to fill the gap (Rule #1 !).
Bento making seems so time consuming but many of the dishes, especially side dishes, are often something I make in bulk for everyday meal, not made specially for bento. All I do in the morning is to take little bit of those and assemble by following those 4 rules. Easy peasy !
