If you have a free day in Japan and don't really know where to go or what to do, here is my recommendation.
Japan open-air folk house museum
There are 23 old folk houses reconstructed from all over Japan in the museum. You can go inside the houses and see how the living of Japanese farmer or fisherman was like. Almost everything has a explanation in English.
You will feel as if you time-tripped to a hundred years ago and are walking around countryside of Japan but actually it's only 40 minutes from Shinjuku station or 60 minutes from Tokyo station.
The museum is in a vast park called Ikuta Ryokuchi Park and there are a lot to see beyond the museum in the park such as science museum, Taro Okamoto museum, traditional indigo dyeing workshop, etc. You will need a whole day to explore. There is a soba noodle restaurant in the folk house museum but you can also bring bento lunch box to enjoy your lunch under the Sun !
Here is a short movie from my second visit to the folk house museum last weekend. Enjoy !
