I sometimes get questions about my favorite restaurants in Tokyo. When they have several days in Tokyo, there is an eel restaurant I always recommend. It's a bit far from central Tokyo so it may not be an option if you have only a day or two in Tokyo. It's near Hakone so if you are going to Hakone, add this to your to-go list ! Their unajyu, bento box topped with eel, is the best unajyu ever !
It's Michelin restaurant called Tomoei. (website only in Japanese)
I wasn't a big fan of eel myself but after having their unajyu, I just fell in love with it ! It doesn't mean I am a fan of any unajyu, it has to be THEIR unajyu ! Their eel is so soft, almost melting in your mouth and it's cooked just right. It comes with kimosui - ell soup and otsukemono - Japanese pickled vegetable which are also very good. When unajyu is served in front of you, take the lid off, sprinkle a bit of sansyo - Japanese pepper (the greenish powder on the eel in the photo), take some of the eel and the rice underneath together and it's time to indulge in a divine moment ! Other than unajyu, their seasonal dishes are also stunning. I had tempura and sashimi, both with very seasonal ingredients, the other day and these were awesome !
I just love everything about Tomoei. The dishes and the presentation are so beautiful, the staffs are very nice and professional and look at the chopstick rest. It's eel too ! How perfect !
It's very popular restaurant and you can't just go and have your unajyu. Make sure you call them and reserve your unajyu, and some other dishes if available, in advance. They told me they are not really good at English and aren't so confident talking with you on the phone but they are very willing to help you. So try !
